During this course you will learn about multiple key responsibilities and roles that you will undertake when assisting in the development of children in their early years. Cultural awareness is a raw subject in today’s society. The course includes modules where you can ensure a positive attitude towards everyone in your workplace setting, how cultural differences can be embraced and how you can gain a better understanding of the scope and importance of inclusion in the childcare industry, no matter a child’s background or circumstances to ensure equal opportunities for all children. This course will also help to ensure that you follow important policies and guidelines with modules on safeguarding and health and safety in the early years. If you work in a school or childcare setting, it’s crucial that you have a good understanding of the government’s counter terrorism strategy Prevent. This module of the course is designed to teach you all you need to know about this important initiative. Prevent is designed to help professionals understand their specific roles and responsibilities when it comes to identifying and taking action with regard to people who are at risk of, or who already have been radicalised and are supporting or getting involved in terrorism.

KEY LEARNING POINTS
Learn how to use inclusion in settings to help the development of communities where all people are equally valued and have the same opportunities for participation.
Identify the barriers that stop people from participating in activities fully. Understand what causes these barriers, such as disabilities, learning difficulties, cultural differences and language barriers, and try to find solutions to help people overcome them.
Understand the importance of adapting activities so that those with additional needs can be included alongside their peers.
Learn about some of the ways in which practitioners can promote diversity, equality and inclusion. Learn how to support others to do so, as well.
Get to grips with some of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) statutory framework, particularly the paragraphs related to inclusive practice. Work through the four related EYFS 2008 Principles in Practice cards that should be readily available in your work environment (and also downloadable via the Department for Education (DfE) website).
Understand that cultural awareness is a vital component when supporting diversity, equality and inclusion.
Appreciate every aspect of a person’s culture, from the outward signs to their values and morals. Recognise some of the challenges that people have to face when trying to live alongside other cultures.
Recognise the cultural similarities and differences, and the importance of them within the childcare environment, as a requirement of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).
Learn how to provide refugee and asylum seeker support using the relevant advice packs available to early years practitioners.
Understand the content of the EYFS 2008 Principles into Practice cards that cover ‘personal, social and emotional development’, and ‘knowledge and understanding of the world’. These are available to be downloaded online via the Department for Education (DfE) website, but should also be available at your workplace.
Appreciate the notion that there is no best culture, only different ones. Apply this to the workplace ethos.
Understand the basic issues relating to safeguarding and when you should be concerned.
Learn how to promote safeguarding by addressing aspects of your service that are related.
Appreciate the importance of safeguarding, and why it should be a priority during training.
Read up about the relevant legislation, guidance and practice in the UK with regards to the child protection system.
Understand some of the signs, symptoms and effects of child abuse and neglect.
Learn how to identify poor practice, with the help of a PowerPoint presentation that is delivered as part of the course.
Gain insight into how children can keep themselves safe, and how you can help them to develop these skills.
Explore a setting’s policy and procedures for reporting safeguarding concerns.
Work through the guided learning and independent study, including relevant news stories, NSPCC guidance, the EYFS standards of care, charities that can provide info and advice on safeguarding children, reports and Ofsted documents.
Learn how and why the Prevent programme succeeds in stopping people becoming radicalised and supporting or participating in terrorism.
Find out how you can contribute in a professional capacity to implement anti radicalisation policies.
Explore how the Prevent policies and procedures work and how they are implemented in different settings.
Discover how the promotion of violence to influence any kind of political change is relevant to Prevent.

Learn how to establish a safe and secure environment for children, and recognise the importance of using risk assessments to raise everybody’s awareness to potential dangers.
Identify ways in which practitioners can prevent safety hazards.
Look at ways in which leaders can maintain a healthy, safe and secure environment for children, particularly with regards to hygiene practices including washing hands properly. Understand basic hygiene and how to promote it within an early years service.
Learn more about the procedures for accidents, injuries, illnesses and other emergencies.
Explore ways in which you can encourage children to manage risk for themselves, in order to promote independence and safeguard future well-being.
Take a look at the EYFS statutory framework and get to grips with Section 3, which covers the safeguarding and welfare requirements, and promoting children’s welfare.
