  • Discover which equipment is used and learn the correct techniques to follow as well as learn how to select the appropriate tools for each job.
  • Learn the importance of the use of protective equipment and clothing as well as know how to clean equipment and correct storage methods.
  • Understand the work, which the client has requested and know how to assess and plan the work to be done within an agreed timescale.
  • Gain a thorough understanding of anatomy and health and know what steps to take in the event of accidental cuts and friction burns. You will recognize normal signs of health and detect any abnormalities and address them appropriately.
  • Be mindful of getting authorisation from the client or senior staff before using anti-parasitic products. You will also learn how to assess situations, which may or may not need a referral to a veterinary surgeon.
  • Learn about the pre-bath process to discover why a dog’s coat should be bathed before trimming, and when a dog’s coat should be removed prior to bathing.
  • Grasp the techniques to groom out a coat without injuring the dog and understand the importance of not removing too much hair.
  • Understand the different types of cleansing products available, their purposes and the types of coat and conditions for which they are suitable.
  • Get to grips with the bathing process and know the importance of preventing solutions entering the dog’s eyes, mouth and ears, and why it is important to tell the client if this happens.
  • Know the methods to remove excess water from the dog prior to drying and why it is important to do this, as well be able to identify when coats are completely dry and the potential consequences of not drying a dog properly.
  • Understand why particular care is required when removing excess hair from around eyes and ears and learn why it’s important to make a dog ‘squeaky clean’.
  • Know why it is necessary to check the anal glands, eyes, ears, skin, teeth and gums and learn how to clean the dog’s teeth safely and efficiently.
  • Learn the importance of removing excess hair for the dog’s hygiene and learn how to clip dogs’ nails and what to do if they bleed.
  • Understand the external examination of anal sacs; what is classed as normal, when expression may be necessary, why it is done and the possible consequences of doing it incorrectly or ignoring their poor condition.
  • Know the different types of breeds and how styling is achieved for smooth and medium-coated dogs as well as recognise and understand the extra care required for styling and finishing long-coated dogs.
  • Know the type of equipment used for styling and finishing wire-coated dogs as well as learn how each style is achieved for wire-coated dogs.
  • Understand techniques for styling and finishing different breeds of curly-coated dogs and how styling is achieved for curly-coated dogs.
