Description

Good relationships between children and the practitioners who care for them are essential for effective childcare provision. Building positive relationships is vital and, as one of the four primary themes outlined in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, it’s not something that should be overlooked. By the end of this course, students will understand the importance of positive relationships, and the need for a key person in the learning environment, who the child (and his or her parents) can trust.
Understand the Role of a Key Person
Once the course is completed, students will understand the role of the key person, and the relationship that they need to build between themselves and a child’s parents or primary caregivers. Having a solid relationship between the two is essential if you wish to provide the child with well-rounded personal, social and emotional development.
Appointing a Key Person is a legal requirement of the EYFS framework document, and if you’re hoping to take on the job role in the future, you need to be prepared for the responsibilities that come with it.
Create Confidence
Feeling accepted and cared for is a great foundation on which a child can build positive relationships, confidence and independence, and it is these building blocks that will help them to thrive within your setting. Confidence and happiness are core elements of a child’s development, and this feeling of acceptance will remain with them well into their future.
KEY LEARNING POINTS
While this course is predominantly aimed at those working, or wishing to work, within a nursery setting, it can also be beneficial to practitioners working in a variety of early years learning environments.
Learn about the role of the key person, and the relationship that the key person needs to build with the child, and their parents. Identify some of the key attributes that a key person should demonstrate in order to offer an effective childcare provision.
Learn how to promote personal, social and emotional development and gain a better understanding of what this means in your practice.
Identify some of the factors that can affect a child’s ability to build a positive relationship and explore some of the key emotional needs that they may experience.
Gain insight into how children develop friendships. Once in your setting, make observations that can help support your findings.
Learn how to use ‘tell me about’ cards to write something about a child in your care that you can give to their parents – this doesn’t have to be an important milestone, but it’s a great way of forming a relationship with parents.
